To help get pregnant, get fit – but don’t overdo it

Overly intense exercise may make it more difficult for healthy weight women to conceive, according to recent research. For overweight women, however, hardcore workouts are not an impediment to becoming pregnant.
For the study, American and Danish researchers recruited 3,628 women aged between 18 and 40 years who were planning to become pregnant but who were not undergoing any fertility treatment. Information on height, weight, medical and reproductive history, lifestyle and behaviour was collected by the researchers – who then followed up every two months for a year – or until the woman became pregnant.
The study team found that moderate exercise levels were linked to slightly increased fertility. Study author, and associate professor of epidemiology at the Boston University School of Public Health, Lauren Wise, said, ‘Our study found that higher levels of vigorous exercise were associated with lower fertility rates in normal-weight women, but not overweight and obese women.’
Advising women who are planning to become pregnant to maintain a healthy exercise regime, but not to go too hard, Wise cited previous studies of elite female athletes that suggested intense workouts can potentially disturb women’s menstrual cycles and ovulation.
Commenting on the study, director of the division of maternal-fetal medicine and an associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, said; ‘We recommend our patients get moderate aerobic exercise, akin to 30 minutes a day is usually what we say. Walking is very important. If they engage in very vigorous exercise – running, fast cycling, gymnastics or swimming – more than five hours a week, it makes them less fertile.’

Mamas need to Move It to Lose It!!!!

Know someone who’s getting amazing results from an insanely low calorie diet? It may be tempting to try severely restricting your calories to lose weight fast, but don’t even think about it! The reality is that very few of us can stay on those kinds of crazy diets for more than a couple of weeks. And to make things worse, most people on starvation diets gain back all of the weight and sometimes more within a few months later.
In weight-loss terms, fat is energy and the best way to lose it is to use it. You have to do it with diet and exercise. If you diet without exercise, the majority of your weight loss will be from muscle. The minute you stray from your diet, the weight will come right back.
The only way to lose it for good is to get moving! Exercise not only helps you burn calories, it also helps build, strengthen and maintain lean muscle. Exercise has another benefit called “after burn.” A great circuit routine combining cardio and resistance training keeps burning fat not just during your workout, but for hours afterward.
Doing any kind of physical activity is healthier than sitting on the couch eating biscuits or sitting around with your mothers group having coffee and cake. Activities like cleaning or shopping and playing with the kids burn calories, but not enough. To see dramatic weight loss, you must do cardio and resistance training.
Cardio is defined as any activity that is rhythmic, continuous and requires large muscles like the legs, back and chest. Resistance training is defined as any activity that uses a resistance to work against, whether it be your own body weight (such as push ups) or using dumbbells (such as chest press). While all the above get you moving, the action is stop and start. There’s no reason to give up, just be aware that you must put in time for some cardio/resistance activity as well.

Well just as important as it is to eat a great breakfast to start the day, it is also as equally important to reduce your food consumption as the day goes on. So plan to eat a good solid breakfast, a good lunch, and reduce your meal portions at dinner time. Remember that as you get closer to bedtime your body starts to wind down and you will not have the same opportunity at night to burn those consumed meal calories as you did earlier in the day.
